Vivian Maier: a photographer found

For some time now I have resumed the good habit of attending exhibitions to stimulate creativity, to keep alive the hunger for beautiful things and to keep myself constantly inspired; every time I have free time I go to see one. Last month I had the opportunity to go and see the exhibition of one of my favourite photographers, Vivian Maier.

Vivian Maier (February 1, 1926 - April 21, 2009) was a nanny of wealthy Chicago families with a passion for photography, who through the black and white shots captured with her Rolleiflex left us a testimony of what life was like. in America in the 1950s, thus becoming the pioneer of street photography and self-portraits, who loved to take pictures by reflecting his image in whatever allowed him to.

As with other artists who remained unknown or semi-unknown during their lifetime, Vivian Maier and, above all, her vast quantity of negatives, was discovered in 2007 thanks to the tenacity of John Maloof, who bought part of Maier's archive at auction. engaged in the research of period photos for one of his books on Chicago. Maloof bought a box full of negatives for $ 380 and found what is now considered one of the most important street photography collections of the 20th century. He immediately understood that he had found a precious treasure and from that moment he began to search for material concerning this mysterious photographer, arriving to archive over 150,000 negatives and 3,000 prints.

Vivian was shooting for herself, almost all of her rolls were never developed before her death, no one was aware of her boundless artistic talent, an innate talent that made her grasp what Cartier-Bresson called "the decisive moment", that unrepeatable instant in which all the elements are in harmony. Her life can be compared to that of the American poet Emily Dickinson, who wrote her reflections and her poems without ever publishing them and, indeed, sometimes hiding them in unexpected places, where they were found only after her death.

Vivian Maier's images mostly depict street scenes in Chicago and New York in the 1950s and 1960s. Vivian Maier spied on life, hidden behind her Rolleiflex.

The exhibition, curated by Anne Morin and Alessandra Mauro, is organized in collaboration with diChroma Photography and promoted by Forma Meravigli, an initiative of the Forma per la Fotografia Foundation in collaboration with the Milan and Contrasto Chamber of Commerce.

The exhibition presented by Forma Meravigli collects 120 black and white photographs taken between the 1950s and 1960s along with a selection of colour images taken in the 1970s, as well as some super 8 films showing how Vivian Maier approached her subjects.

The book, Vivian Maier. Una fotografa ritrovata , published by Contrasto accompanies the exhibition.

If you haven't done so yet, I highly recommend you go and see the exhibition, you still have time until January 31st.
